Postcards from Munich

Sometimes I reminisce of our year spent in Germany.

It was a year to remember full of new experiences and the unknown. I lived in the grey area and became really comfortable with it. Uncertainty was becoming the norm. Going out exploring the city was stressful, getting on a new underground line, another transaction to get a piece of bread, using the ATM and simply encountering people at a department store made me uneasy. My German is pretty rough. You can only imagine.

From that year, I realize the LA nuances we take for granted. The biggest one- the sun! Take a look at these pictures taking at the exact same time of the year. Yep, there's still know. Imagine snow from November to February. I don't miss it at all.

I love California.

Christmas in Munich

Frohe Weihnachten!

That's how you say Merry Christmas in German.

This year, the holidays came so fast. I don't know if it's the LA weather or how busy things have been. It all seems so....what's the word...fabricated.

LA Christmases will never be the same after experiencing a German Christmas. There's no Thanksgiving or Black Friday to kick off the holidays. Instead, the weather sets the mood and soon Christmas outdoor markets appear and everyone bundles up at night to go out to the night markets to enjoy a glass of Glühwein, a hot, mulled spiced wine, and enjoy a bite of festive eats from outdoor stands among friends. It may be snowing outside but when you're in a plaza surrounded by old building with a glass of warm wine and a garlic bread and laughing to jokes, suddenly you can't feel the snow anymore.

Here are some photos from last year. I've been waiting to share these pics since this time last year we were so slammed with moving back to LA that I forgot to share these. It's surreal being at a coffeeshop in LA while it's sunny out knowing that that this was all a year ago.
